After a rather uncomfortable weekend, I attempted to go for a brisk run last night….it was just not happening! I had to settle for a brisk walk… and resort to my new best friend for comfort – the ice pak! I learned that a frequent cause of shin splints is the extreme difference in strength between the shin and calf muscles. Splints can be prevented by strengthening the shin muscles. One way to achieve this is by doing reverse calf raises (Thank you Roly for the, ummm, interesting demonstration!!!) Now, to alleviate the pain, I was advised to soak my leg in hot water with vinegar and Epson salt…and to prevent them from recurring I’ve learned that stretching is imperative. I hope I can get through this by Saturday…stay tuned.
